Behind the Chair: Interview with Stylist Marah Lane of Design 1 Salon Spa

Marah Lane is an incredibly talented stylist at Design 1 Salon Spa in Michigan. We love watching her transform her clients into blonde bombshells, chocolate brown goddesses and even luscious lavender ladies.

We had the chance to catch up with Marah for a few minutes and talk about how she got her start and what trends she's seeing for Fall. About the photos- all hair featured in the images below were cut, colored, styled and photographed by Marah!

BLNDN: Hi Marah, thanks for chatting with us today! Give us a little insight into how you first got started with hair...

Marah: I had always been a very artistic person even when I was a child. So when my older sister went to cosmetology school, I was very intrigued with it all. I signed up for school right after I graduated and I fell in love immediately! 

BLNDN: Love it! So, you've had your pick of salons in Michigan. Why Design 1 Salon Spa?

Marah: Design 1 Salon Spa is the supportive atmosphere and I love the strong women I work with. They also provide us with the best education. Design 1 is focused on us growing as stylists, I can’t imagine working anywhere else!

BLNDN: That’s fantastic! So being in the business for quite awhile, what are some of the trends you're noticing in and around Grand Rapids?

Marah: Blonde blonde blonde. Icy, buttery, honey, beige-y, you name it.

BLNDN: Yes! We're seeing the same here in Southern California. What styles and colors do you see coming for Winter 2018? How about Spring 2019?

Marah: For the winter trends, I see a lot of rich autumn shades, some winter blues, but with a pop of blaring neon. They seem to almost make an effort to transfer a ray of summer to the gloomy days of winter. For the spring, I see a lot of dreamy mid-tone palettes along with a bunch of color-blasted fabrics.

BLNDN: We love the autumn shades creeping into balayage as of late. Besides what your clients are asking for, what guys and gals do you look towards to spot the trends early?

Marah: Alexa Chung, Arizona Muse, Ashley Madekwe and Chloë Grace Moretz 

BLNDN: Great trendsetters and a few new ones we're not connected with! We have to ask, as a BLNDN user for awhile now, what do you love about the product and why would you recommend it to your clients?

Marah: The quality of each product..and I can see a difference after just one use! I also love the toning mask- Tone You. Out of this world purple pigment! There is nothing like it out there.



BLNDN: Oh yes that purple, and it can be used once a week! Our Brighten You also has those toning properties and is something you can use every time you shampoo! Got any suggestions for people who haven't tried BLNDN yet?

BLNDN:Well we've got to agree with that. Once you finish up with a client, what's next? Do you give them tips? 

Marah: The most important part of prescribing the right at-home care is understanding exactly what your client's needs and wants are so you can send them home with the recipe for happy, healthy hair.



BLNDN: Truth! It's definitely hard to maintain that salon look so we appreciate all the help we can get! On the flip side, for those just starting out as a stylist, what words of advice do you have for them?

Marah: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, get as much knowledge as you possibly can and be open to trying new things!
